I've been curious for a while now to see how UT99 runs under Linux. So I installed Linux Mint on my game box. Then I grabbed the Linux version of UT99 from Old Unreal. It took a while to configure because Linux puts things in places you'd never think. Anyway, with some help using AI, I was able to get it all up and running. I've been playing on our sniper server today. The default drivers that UT99 for Linux installs are three different versions of OpenGL. So far, I can't get any better than 1024x768, which is not as high a resolution as I was running under Windows. So I'm working to install or point UT99 to a different driver so I can run a much higher resolution.
There's an install script that you can grab from Old Unreal. Once you run it, it pulls all of the Linux-based files from their site and installs patch 469e as well. At the end of the install, it will also ask if you want a shortcut to UT99 on your desktop.
WHAT YOU CAN DO UNDER UT99 IN LINUX:
You can use your user.ini and unrealtournament.ini if you want to.
You can use custom skins. You just need to copy your skin files from your Windows machine, onto a USB stick and drop them into the appropriate folders under Linux. You can also use custom sounds from themes of your choice. Once again, just copy and drop the .uax and .u files into the appropriate folder in Linux.
WHAT YOU CAN'T DO:
There's some debate about using unreal.ed (the map editor) under UT99 for Linux. From what I gathered, it basically does not work.
All in all though, UT99 runs very well under Linux. If anyone else is interested in trying it, give me a shout.
